The compression of the PLG-150AP down to 16 MBs takes all the life out of it for me and adds a buzz for others. Why don’t they release a dedicated half rack space piano module with one superb uncompressed large piano sample in it? Kurzweil has released piano modules for many years. |

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough Hear, hear! I fully second the motion but at the same time doubt whether the political will is there. If there’s a way, there’s not necessarily the will. |

How about loading piano-samples into the motif.

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough The Plugboard was really meant for motif classic, S90, and Mo-rack users. The ES has a CD-rom which they can probably send everyone an uncompressed version of the piano sample to load. Maybe the uncompressed sound can also be placed on a smart media card since they go up to 128MB that the S90 can support. This is an idea. |

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough The DCP VR60 and Studio 88 pianos available on MotifMart are nice piano samples (both around 54MB). |

I don’t own an AP so I can make a direct comparison I’m afraid, but they sound very musical to my ears. |

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough Yes, the Kurzweil Micro Ensemble is a great little half-rack box for $350 and includes lots of great orchestral samples, EPs and others in additions to an excellent piano. As far as Yamaha releasing such a box, I think they fear it would eat into their higher end sales. I can’t blame them as it probably would. |

No, the VR 60 and Studio 88 pianos are external sample based and therefore can only be used with the Motif and Motif ES.

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough
I have the VR60 sample which I use with a Motif classic. It’s 3 layer sample uses 60Mb and the samples are typically around 8s long. The sampling using microphones placed on a dummy head result in a stereo sound which is very ‘real’ when using headphones. It gives the impression of the sound coming from the room rather than being a recording. It works well in a mix too. Oh one last thing, in the currect piano criticising theme, no ..... it is not perfect, it has it’s own faults and it’s own qualities. I use it along with all the other piano sounds I have.

Re: 16MBs aren’t enough As I posted way back when (do a search on VR-60), that piano is outstanding, and has served me well for over a year. Being sample based, it requires RAM (thus Motif), but does not add any polyphony. As a result, the issue is still open, as some users have no RAM capability, and others need the polyphony that a PLG board adds. So make the best, most informed decision you can. I haven’t decided yet. |

Well, if 16 MB aren’t enough, then how about 30 gig.
