I was just listening to the MP3 demo of the 150AP when it occured to me: the way they brought this PLG to market was pure brilliance. Motif users were dying for a better piano, as were some S90 users. But instead of giving the masses what they wanted, when they wanted it, they instead released the Motif ES. Now, people who really wanted the better piano *and* had the cash, bought a new ES. Yamaha even offered some decent loyalty incentives for current users to sweeten the deal. Then, about a year later, once all the S90/Motif users that could afford to buy a whole new rig, did buy an ES, they released the PLG150AP for the rest of us. More or less everyone is happy and Yamaha makes the maximum profit. The PLG didn’t eat into their ES sales and Motif users were not abandoned. Excellent business decisions. Really, every gets what they want. Nice work, Yammy. |

Re: Brilliant Marketing—PLG150AP
It’s fun to second guess. We’ll probably never know.

Re: Brilliant Marketing—PLG150AP For the record, that was me saying no more PLG’s! I was wrong. I really thought I was right. I thought they were done with those things. All signs pointed to it. But in the end they gave the people what they want. I think this forum may have played a part, but we’ll never know for sure. Maybe Arafat has connections at Yamaha and was the real reason we got the new PLG. Maybe he threated suicide bombers unless the triple-strike PLG was released. Now that he is about to die, there will surely be NO MORE PLGs! |

Re: Brilliant Marketing—PLG150AP This is a good theory, but the PLG150-AP does not sound like the Motif ES’s native triple strike piano at all. It’s a completely different sound. I’m comparing the two now and there is a real difference in tonality. I’ll be posting comparitive samples soon in my “hands-on review” thread. Some of us never really liked the Motif ES’s pianos either so the AP card appeals to unsatisfied ES pianists as well. |
