Hi

I’m wondering if I can use the Remote Control function of my Mo6 with Cubase via MIDI interface+MIDI in/out instead of Mo’s USB port. The manual says USB but doesn’t say whether MIDI port will work.

I’m having troubles with computer noise transmitted via USB cable to the audio out of the Mo so I guess using MIDI interface might help.

Thank you.

Re: Remote Control function with MIDI interface?

Try it and see.

I think the recommendation is that the Remote data is transmitted on a separate STREAM to the audio data to prevent overloading the MIDI buffer with too much info, or indeed with too much simultaneous data causing MIDI Playback to glitch.

With that in mind, it stands to reason that you need to use the USB connection to give you the multiple streams of MIDI.

If you do try putting the remote data in with the Muical data, bear in mind that the data will probably cause strange things to happen to any instruments on the particular midi channels you may be using for the remote data. At the very least, you should turn the sounds on thos channels to OFF.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Re: Remote Control function with MIDI interface?

I’m wondering if I can use the Remote Control function of my Mo6 with Cubase via MIDI interface+MIDI in/out instead of Mo’s USB port. The manual says USB but doesn’t say whether MIDI port will work.

And the manual is correct. You must have a multiple port interface. What that means is the REMOTE CONTROL commands must have their own separate MIDI PORT. A Port, by definition is a two way communication bus (MIDI IN/MIDI OUT) that is the equivalent of running a MIDI cable in both direction to and from your computer. A Port, by definition, has 16 MIDI channels for communication.

So in effect a pair of MIDI cables is a single Port interface. REMOTE CONTROL requires its own, separate, Port. So for the MO you must use USB. Port 1 is for the normal MIDI data (note-ons, controllers, tempo, etc), you can then designate Port 3 or 4 as the Port for your Remote Control commands.

These commands need to be on a separate Port or otherwise when you play notes or press buttons on the MO you will have strange behavior from your software. Button presses use MIDI Notes to turn something ON or OFF… Control Sliders and Knobs can send values from 0-127… this is why Remote Control commands require a separate, discreet MIDI PORT to communicate.

The only option for the MO is USB. The Yamaha USB-MIDI driver is capable of up to 8 Ports… although the MO cannot use all 8; it can use up to as many as 4 of these for different functions. REMOTE CONTROL of your DAW software (Cubase), Remote control of the other Yamaha hardware (like a Motif-Rack, etc), a separate so-called “THRU PORT” for sending data to and from an external MIDI device connected via the 5-pin MIDI jacks on the back panel…

I’m having troubles with computer noise transmitted via USB cable to the audio out of the Mo so I guess using MIDI interface might help.

Computers are notorius for introducing ground noise into the USB bus. This can be removed with a transformer isolating DI box inserted on your audio cables. That is the pro way to deal with USB computer-based ground noise. (a so-called “CleanBox")

Getting a better computer power supply (one with double insultation)…

You will find the DI box less expensive (as computer power supplies can cost close to $100, while DI boxes of the type mentioned are typically less than half that...)

Re. Noisy USB, please see this thread in which the subject has been discussed in detail and assistance and advice has been provided. And please note the reference there to the Sound on Sound article. It is excellent and will supply a lot of answers to questions you might have. Check it out!..........frank
