Re: Cubase 5 announced

Congratulations, Peter, for being the first person to post the link here! Folks living in the UK, Europe and on the east coast of NA definitely have a time advantage over those of us who live on the west coast and are still asleep when you ‘early birds’ arise! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= .................frank

Re: Cubase 5 announced

Do you think Cubase 5 will be better than the new Pro-Tools 8?  I’m starting to get comfortable using Cubase AI4 and am seriously considering getting Cubase 5.  A lot of my friends use Pro-Tools and swear by it with all of the “industry standard” talk.

Re: Cubase 5 announced

Re. ProTools and Cubase, in a way they have different strengths, and ProTools does not compete with Cubase in the same way Sonar or Logic do. Many composers and studios use both, and they can compliment each other. I assume you are considering ProTools LE 8 and not the full version of ProTools 8, which can bring with it some very hefty software and hardware purchases??
I wouldn’t base a lot on what people claim is the ‘industry standard’. As I say quite a lot of studios in the ‘industry’ use ProTools AND another application like Cubase or Sonar or Logic. Check them out, look at your needs and what you hope to accomplish and then YOU decide. IMHO any of them would be a great step up from AI! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= ...................frank

Re: Cubase 5 announced

Looks like February for availability (although I guess regions may vary).

For us UK chaps, I see that Steinberg will be touring Digital Village stores in Feb with “freebies, upgrades and plenty of Cubase 5 stock”

Re: “(although I guess regions may vary).”
---Yup. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= Not that I am in an hurry myself for a number of reasons, but my fellow Canadians seemed to always be near the end of the chain. Steinberg Canada doesn’t even have a mention of it on their web site yet, and last time it was nearly 3 months between the time the product was in the hands of others before it was shipped in Canada. I look at it in a positive light though. First, other users end up testing the new release and we get a clearer picture of what does and doesn’t work, and second I never fully switch over to a new release anyway until months or perhaps a year after it is released. Too risky....and so far there’s never been any first release of Cubase since the very beginning that has been bug and problem free and hasn’t needed updates. So when, if, you receive it, enjoy, and be sure to report your conclusions here..............frank

Can you expand on that a bit?  Still getting started with hobby-level work, but AI seems to meet my needs at the moment for functionality, track count, etc.  Would just like to know the thoughts behind the statement; if the engines are the same, what is it that make it better?

Thanks,

Re: Cubase 5 announced

For those who simply can’t wait, the full set of documentation is actually already posted.

Yes I mean the 5 or 6 PDFs which constitute the books etc in the retail box.

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Cubase_5/5.0.0.82/docs_english.zip

Regards to all,

Re: Cubase 5 announced

Hi Scott,
No need for me to write much on the subject of AI; I expect you will find the answer to your question yourself as you work through the program and ‘expand your horizons’ naturally. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=
AI is a very lite, free, introductory version to some of the features of the commercial versions. It is designed to be an introduction and to entice one to consider upgrading. It lacks many of the important features of the commercial version and is limited in what it can do. Having said that, for you much will depend on what you want to do. If you never go beyond recording a few simple tracks, and find it meets your needs, then by all means stick with it. It’s free. However, IMHO it’s not something that someone who owns and has advanced to the full version of any DAW would be happy with if they had to revert to using only AI /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= Anyway, as I say, you’ll probably discover its advantages and disadvantages yourself as you progress. Just FYI, I’ve attached a comparison chart of the various versions of Cubase. It has been posted here numerous times. The chart is from last spring, so some things have changed slightly, but in this instance it should serve the purpose. HTH.................frank
