Using the Steinberg MR816CSX and Motif XS/Motif Rack XS with mLAN16E2… requires the new Yamaha Steinberg Firewire Driver (YSFW driver), the new Motif XS Operating System (v1.10) and a firmware updates to the mLAN16E2 (v1.06) and the latest Yamaha Extensions (v1.40).

You must have the following items updated:

· A Cubase 4.5.2 program (Cubase AI4, Cubase Studio 4, Cubase 4)
· Yamaha Steinberg Firewire Driver 1.1.0
· Motif XS must be operating system v1.10.xx
· Yamaha Extensions for Steinberg version 1.4.0.

_These Extension allow Cubase to automatically identify the Audio Driver active on your computer. For example, if you are using the YSFW driver you will be asked if you want to use it as your ASIO driver upon launching Cubase. If the AI Driver or mLAN Driver are active, you will be prompted if you want to use it as your ASIO driver upon launching Cubase. You can choose which driver you want to use. (However, for the MR816 unit to function, you must use the YSFW driver).
_ These Extensions will also allow Cubase to identify the XS MIDI and Audio Ports by name… ‘Motif XS 1’, ‘Motif XS Remote’, ‘Motif XS Main L’ and ‘Motif XS Main R’, etc.
_ These Extensions, of course, also add the IMPORT > Motif XS SONG function to Cubase.

· You also need an mLAN16E2 that has been updated to firmware 1.06 (available on http://www.yamahasynth as of September 25th, 2008). This firmware update adds a new option for the “IEEE1394 Driver” parameter. This parameter must be set to “FW” when you want to use the XS with the YSFW driver and the MR816CSX.

Motif XS
_ Press [UTILITY]
_ Press [F1] GENERAL
_ Press [SF4] AUTOLOAD
_ Set IEEE1394 Driver = Firewire (FW)
_ You will receive a warning that the change will not become effective until after you power down and power up.
_ Press [STORE] to write this setting to your UTILITY mode system.
_ Reboot

You can STORE these setting in Flash ROM. 
The MIDI IN/OUT parameter will be set to “mLAN”

For those previously using the mLAN drivers or AI drivers:

Windows:
Additionally, if you have the mLAN driver v1.6.3 or the AI driver v1.6.3 on your Windows computer, you will need to deactivate the driver; AUTO ON should be deactivated and OFF selected.

The Steinberg hardware does not use either the mLAN or the AI driver. You do not have to remove the other driver - only deactivate it when using the YSFW driver. You must have version 1.6.3 otherwise the YSFW driver cannot co-exist. If you, for example, have mLAN v1.6.2 or AI v1.6.1 on your computer, you will not be able to use the YSFW driver even when the mLAN or AI driver is OFF. You do not have to uninstall the other drivers (mLAN or AI) when using the YSFW driver, it simply must be version 1.6.3 and it must be OFF.

What this means is if you have the current mLAN or AI Driver (they can remain on your computer and you can use them when you are not using the MR816 unit). Think of drivers as the code that allows a specific device to work. You can use your hardware in many different situations, simply select the appropriate driver for your working situation.

Macintosh:
On the Macintosh side, the version mLAN/AI v1.1.4 can be on the computer but the CONNECTION MANAGER must be OFF, when you are going to use the YSFW driver. An icon will appear in the SYSTEM PREFERENCES > OTHER area with access to the CONTROL PANEL and MR EDITOR.

On both computer systems, the “MR EDITOR” program is to be used only when Cubase 4 or Nuendo 4 is not the DAW or you using the MR816csx standalone. The MR EDITOR functions are already built-in to Cubase/Nuendo. It is simply a graphic interface utility for those not using Steinberg software.

The “CONTROL PANEL” can be reached from within Cubase: DEVICES > DEVICE SETUP… > VST AUDIO SYSTEM > YAMAHA STEINBERG FW ASIO


VST CONNECTIONS > INPUTS

Shown below in the screen shot is the VST CONNECTIONS > Inputs tab options when you have both the MR816CSX and the Motif XS connected via firewire to the computer. That is a simple daisy-chain where one fire wire cable connects the Computer > MR816CSX and a firewire cable goes from the MR816CSX > Motif XS

This firewire daisy-chain is sufficient to handle all routing of audio and MIDI signals to and from your computer. Up to three devices can be connected. If you were to add a Motif-Rack XS or perhaps as a third device another MR816CSX, it would simply be added to the list of available input channels. You can see that the current configuration of the MR816CSX is:
· 8 analog inputs
· 6 ADAT inputs
· Stereo S/PDIF inputs

In this particular configuration, I have connected the Motif XS to the MR816CSX via digital coaxial to the S/PDIF Input. Routing signal to the MR816CSX in this manner will allow me to monitor (hear) the Motif XS. Remember each device is connected “peer-to-peer” to the computer. If this has not been clear up until now, let’s get this point clear. Each device, that is both the Motif XS and the MR816CSX act as audio interfaces. If, as in my example, I have my monitor speakers connected to the OUTPUTS (1&2) of the MR816CSX it follows that it is going to have to receive signal in some fashion from the Motif XS in order for me to hear it when I play “live” – the monitor situation.

If in Cubase I create a STEREO VST Connection that is set to receive “Motif XS7 Main L” and “Motif XS7 Main R” I would be able to record, but I would have to listen to the Motif XS via its headphone output – as no direct “live” audio path would exist.

Don’t let the fact that things are now digital throw you… if this was analog signal you would not be confused. The MR816CSX is acting as your “mixer”, that is, it is taking incoming live signal and routing it to the DAW (computer running Cubase) and it is also responsible for routing signal to the monitor speakers.

If you only connect your keyboard directly to the recorder (Cubase) – you can only hear it after it goes through the recorder. You want to hear it “live” then connect to the mixer (MR816CSX) and select Direct Monitor.
