Hi All,

I have a Yamaha Motif XS with mLAN16E2, Cubase AI4 and a Macbook Pro running OSX (Leopard). And I am currently working on a project for some musicians who have previously recorded a 3:05 (m) song. The song has three instrument parts and one vocal part. Throughout the song the tempo change events occur twice and fluctuates - unintentionally - in a few random areas.

I have 3 tracks, Audio 1 contains the .WAV, Audio 2 is my monitor bus and the third is the Motif (MIDI). I am going to add some percussion and string instruments to the song but I am having problems with the tempo track since the .WAV was recorded on a high quality hand held recorder and saved as a .WAV I can’t seem to find a way to sync my additions in MIDI AND benefit from tempo and related features like quantize and/or a click. How could I resolve this?

I would like to be able to sync the .WAV file even if I may have to sacrifice some pitch or quality. Are there any options that Cubase AI4 has that can resolve this item.

Re: Tempo Issues When Importing Pre-Recorded .WAV

If I understand you correctly you have a “live” recording of music that is a .wav file and that the ‘live’ performance has some tempo variations.

The Cubase Studio 4 and Cubase 4 versions of Cubase offer you two very professional solutions… where you neither have to sacrifice pitch or quality.

There is AUDIO WARP - where you adjust the tempo of the audio wav. You can adjust the tempo of audio without changing pitch or losing quality (of course, there are limits at extreme variatons - but if you are talking about small variations in tempo of 10-15%, no problem).

And there is TIME WARP - where you build a tempo map to match the musician’s live playing. Then your MIDI data will match what was played live.

Visit the Steinberg User site and check out the following short Video clips for an idea of what is possible:

Look for AUDIO WARP (near the top of the list)
And for TIMEWARP (near the bottom of the list)

Cubase AI4 (free version) does not do offer the TIME WARP tool but you do get a “playback only” version of the AUDIO WARP function.

Re: Tempo Issues When Importing Pre-Recorded .WAV

Hi Bad Mister!

How are you? I recently started going to meet Greg and Gabriel at Guitar Center (NYC) for the Club Cubase meeting. Anyway, I am having some issues with a project I am working on.

I mentioned to Greg that I would be recording a Turkish band this summer. Well they have asked me to remix one of their previously recorded songs. And one of the problems I am finding with my version of Cubase is the ability to sync the tempo track with audio (an imported audio file).

Problem 1: The problem it was a live performance and not a studio performance. And the tempo is a little messy. It is not syncing up with the click track.

Problem 2: Since I am using Cubase AI4 without the upgrade I do not have the “Timewarp” function mentioned in Greg’s video. Is there another way to achieve the same result?

Problem 3: Hitpoints in my version of Cubase does not seem to accomplish the same effect without Timewarp. I tried to apply hitpoints and execute the “snap” function but I have not been able to sync the tempo click track and the audio recording.

I also tried to create a tempo from audio events after making hitpoints. This did not work and I tried to stretch the audio to fit the tempo… this also did not work.

Do you have any suggestions or tricks that do not include spending money on an upgrade?

Re: Tempo Issues When Importing Pre-Recorded .WAV

The last question is the big one… sorry, no I don’t. It is the solution for what you require. And well worth the price of admittance.

Live recordings have plenty of feel - even when the timing is all over the place - with TIME WARP you can match your MIDI metronome to tempo of the band. I think you have found a good reason to upgrade to a full version of Cubase

Of course you are right. And I was taught to always listen to the guidance of those who have seen the Sun more times than me (it translates to English poorly). But you get my point… and so I did buy the full version actually I bought Studio 4 but it has all that I need for now at least. Thanks for the advice.
