The YAHAMA BC3A Breath Controller- Can you use it without a PLG150-VL Plug-in Board... and use regular Motif Voices?

YES! . . . Of course you can!
You do have to program each sound that you want to use the BC3A with for that controller though, Just like you would any other assignable controller (FC7, FC4 or FC5).
Below is an example of how to do this:
For this example you will need a BC3A Breath Controller.
First, plug your BC3A ito the Motif.

We will use VOICE MODE, Pre 2 #045 (C14) Br: Analog Bras
1) PUSH [EDIT]
2) PUSH [F4] and then find a contoller set that hasn't been assigned yet...( in this case PUSH [SF3] to select Set 5/6)
3) Select Source to be "BC02".
4) Select Dest to be "Volume"
5) Select Depth to be "+63"
* Store this Voice in the USER memory if you want to retain the changes to this Voice.
Just switching these settings will allow you to create a Sforzando with the BC3A. The BC3A is increasing the volume of the Voice from its programmed level all the way up to the maximum level, by blowing solidly into the breath controller. If you want to completely control the sound from the BC3A, that is only hear the Voice when you blow into the BC3A, make the following additional parameter tweaks:
1) Push [F2] Output and them adjust the "VOLUME" level from its programmed setting of "66" to "0".
.*Now, this Voice will make no sound when you play the keys, unless you blow into the BC3A while playing. By tinkering with the initial volume of the Voice you can create some very expressive nuances for performance.
* Store this Voice in the USER memory if you want to retain the changes to this Voice.
If you have more controller sets left open or simply want to change one that is already programmed, you could assign the "BC02" function to also control the filter as well. This can achieve opening and closing the filter and you can do this as well as changing volume. This is just one example of the many ways you can use the BC3A. The BC3A is most expressive with the modelling technology PLG boards (PLG150-AN and PLG-150 VL).
